This was a great read! thank you for taking the time to explain cover design. I'd love to know why some book covers of the same book vary from country to country? The reason i noticed the jazz parks books is because they had a "bad ass" cover. What other designs did you have in mind for for the jaz parks books?

Wow thank you so much for that.
It's really inspiring to see how these covers are made especially considering I only picked up the books because I saw the cover for One More Bite. I ended up buying all the books. May I just say that although I can see that the very fake looking blood is set as part of the continuity of the series, no professional would have put a bloody sword in her scabbard (One More Bite) as it would rust.
But in any case really cool. And this post has made me want to get into the business of cover art- ahh wishful thinking.

Very cool. I would have loved to be on that set. Good work on Jennifer's books. Can't wait to see the final markup.

In Art we have to work way in advance, so a lot of times you're already designing way before the final manuscript comes in, and you're just working on a first draft or even a rough summary of a book. More frequently it's not that you're designing for a bad book, it's that you're called on to design something for a topic you may have no personal interest in. But that's what makes a good book designer. You don't want to do BAD work on purpose, your name is going to be on it! And Luckily with Orbit, I've had great books to work on so far.

Thank you for posting this!

Cover design is something I have always been interested in.
It can effect the expectations of a reader SO much.
I have read books where I was SO disappointed that the story wasn't nearly as cool as the cover image was - and the inverse were the cover seemed so stupid but the story was amazing - and then made the cover make sense in hind sight.

The covers for Jennifer's books are just gorgeous. It's cool to see how they are created. Great job!

Wonderful post! I loved it. Although I would be very interested in finding out how the covers are designed for books that don't use models and photographs.
