The blurb from The Independent contains a suppurating solecism: &quot;If only more contemporary fiction was like it.&quot; Such an illiterate recommendation is unworth repeating. As Lewis Carroll noted: &quot;`Contrariwise,&#039; continued Tweedledee, `if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn&#039;t, it ain&#039;t.
