The Company is brilliant. Parker is definitely one of the outstanding modern fantasy writers - properly using imaginary settings to explore real human problems. Philosophy, a commitment to character development and bleak, existential plotting. Seriously showing what fantasy can achieve as a genre. Well done!

I'm halfway through "The Company" and I love it. Very tight, intelligent, suspenseful. I rank it close to Scott Bakkers phenomenal "Prince of Nothing" Trilogy, even though it's a totally different kind of book. In fact, it is totally different from any fantasy book I've read so far.
A few years ago, I've read the Fencer Trilogy, which didn't quite click with me back then. Now, I've bought the whole Engineer Trilogy just after reading the first few chapters of "The Company". I'll make it a point to recommend K.J. Parker in our bookshop in Berlin.
