Another solution to the light-speed barrier problem, by the way, which I forgot to mention, is Al Reynolds' notion in House of Suns of 'shatterlings' (clones) who travel the galaxy at less than light speed, but take millions of years to do so. That's serious Sudoku time. Marvellous stuff – dark matter drives, spaceships powered by black holes…either science is amazing or it’s one huge practical joke at our expense.
