Book Cover “Mind Meld”
- Lauren Panepinto - March 17th, 2010
I know you guys are big fans of hearing about covers and design from the artists/publishers side, so I thought I’d send you guys over to SciFi Signal, where they just posted a “Mind Meld” (dorks) on recent scifi/fantasy bookcovers. I was asked to post, and in fairness I excluded all our books, but it was great to see so many Orbit books getting a mention! Here was the question:
Q: It’s generally well accepted that a book cover’s primary responsibility is to sell the book. But artistically speaking, what makes a successful sf/f/h book cover? Which recent sf/f/h books had a cover that blew you away?
Which makes me ask you guys….what’s your favorite ORBIT cover? Let me know in the comments, I’m curious.

We had the new Trudi Canavan covers delivered today, and may I say I love them. Similar to the old ones, but with something a little more instead of just the plain white background. Very nice.
I also love the Jim Butcher Alera Codex book covers. Bold and bright colours on black each with its own Fury symbol on the front. And First Lord’s Fury looks fantastic too.

I quite like Brent Weeks’ covers. I’m terrible for judging a book by its cover and they really got across the idea of assassins / thieves and magic. They weren’t overly detailed and they were different enough from the stereotype of the fantasy cover to stand out.
I’ve been following this blog for a while, and I love all the posts where you show us your cover-design skills. They are all great.

This isn’t my favorite, but how’d yall get Kate Winslet to pose, oh, several years ago? And sans her own eyebrows?

My absolute favorite cover so far is for The Bone Palace by Amanda Downum. It was a close race between it and the cover for the previous book in the series, The Drowning City.

I know I love Larry Rostant’s art, he really does such fantastic characters. I’m launching a new cover he did for orbit in the next few weeks and I loooove it. As far as Jo Graham’s books, I love the trade paperbacks, especially Black Ships, but i so love JJ Palencar’s art he did for the mass market paperbacks as well.

The Sad Tale of the Brother’s Grossbart I love. The whole treatment of that book with the neat feeling paper and the whole faded parchment look combined with that amazing drawing just blew me away.
I also loved the Electric Church series TPB covers. They really evoked the series.
The Drowning City looks very classy on my bookshelf.
I have to say that my favorite series design was the one yall did for Karen Miller’s Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series. The two mages caught my eye in the bookstore before I even knew they were orbit books. Amazing job there!
But, of course, my favorite is my cover! Too bad it hasn’t been unveiled yet so I can’t properly list it…

I liked the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms cover, but then I prefer landscapes to portraits generally. But I like to imagine my characters based on their description and my imagination.

One of the next few mondays we’ll launch the cover for The Broken Kingdoms, and i think it’s as hot as 100k kingdoms.
