Will McIntosh’s Hugo Award-winning “Bridesicle” to become a novel

I am thrilled to report that Will McIntosh is writing a novel for Orbit based on his stunning 2010 Hugo Award-winning short story “Bridesicle.” Three hundred years in the future, technology has extended the lives of the rich and attractive decades. The wealthy can arrange to be reanimated multiple times (with diminishing returns), while in cryogenic dating farms, dead women await lonely suitors to resurrect them and take them home. In this daring and big-hearted novel, the lovelorn navigate a world in which technology has found the outer limits of morality and romance.

Orbit will also publish a novel based on McIntosh’s short story “Defenders,” as well as a number of original short stories.

Will McIntosh is an acclaimed, unique voice in science fiction, and a writer of impressive range. His first novel was published by Night Shade, his second is forthcoming in 2012, and his short work has been widely anthologized. He has won a Hugo Award and an Asimov’s reader poll, and has received a Nebula Award nomination. A professor of psychology, McIntosh lives in Georgia.

A Fiery New Deal for Michael Cobley with Orbit

SEEDS OF EARTH, the first book in Michael Cobley’s space opera trilogy Humanity’s Fire, was first published in the UK in March 2009. Since then, the series described by Iain M. Banks as “Proper, galaxy-spanning space opera” has kept readers glued to its pages and eager to read more. Given the outstanding quality of Michael Cobley’s science fiction and its major success so far in the UK, Orbit is thrilled to announce a worldwide deal for a new book by this bestselling author. Orbit have acquired World English rights from agent John Parker at the Zeno Agency for a new standalone novel by Michael Cobley, set in the Humanity’s Fire universe.

The new book, WARCAGE, is a high-action space adventure currently scheduled for worldwide hardback release in autumn 2013. Ahead of that publication, all three existing books in the Humanity’s Fire series will be published by Orbit US, who are releasing SEEDS OF EARTH in the US in October, ORPHANED WORLDS in November and THE ASCENDANT STARS in December 2012. Anne Clarke, Editorial Director for Orbit UK, says:

Orbit’s First E-Book Only Launch!

We’re thrilled to announce our first ebook only publication from New York Times Bestselling author Lilith Saintcrow! We’ll be publishing The Hedgewitch Queen in December 2011, and the sequel, The Bandit King, in July 2012 in both the US and the UK. The series will be available across all digital reader platforms.

The story centers around a young woman who must advance to the throne amidst court intrigue, conspiracies, and magic.

New authors!

In recent months, we’ve acquired two new authors — and I’m excited to introduce both of them to you!

Orbit US has also acquired GOD SAVE THE QUEEN plus two others from author Kate Locke, a pseudonym for Kathryn Smith. It’s an urban fantasy novel set in our time period — but with a twist. Queen Victoria still rules 175 years after her ascension. This is the world that half-blood Alexandra has been born into — a world where horse-drawn carriages, ballgowns, and corsets mesh with the modern fashions of the humans outside of the vampire aristocracy. We’re publishing GOD SAVE THE QUEEN in July 2012 — and trust me it’s worth the wait.

Orbit worldwide has acquired Amanda Carlson in a new three-book deal. She’s a brand new debut author from Minnesota. I had the privilege of meeting her at the Romantic Times convention (and yes, forgetting to post about that too…). Her three novels: FULL BLOODED, HOT BLOODED, and COLD BLOODED will be out in September 2012, March 2013 and August 2013 respectively. Jessica is the only female werewolf born to a race of males. And prophecy claims that her birth will signal the end of their race. Who said it was easy being a girl?

Deals and Deliveries

Deals! There have been a few. Perhaps this is an understatement. There have been many and now I have to trace my brain back to the last time I’ve posted — please excuse me if you are already aware of some of the below already.

In March, Orbit worldwide also acquired OUT FOR BLOOD and LAST BLOOD in the House of Comarre series by Kristen Painter. Kristen is the author of the upcoming BLOOD RIGHTS (quickly followed by FLESH AND BLOOD and BAD BLOOD) in Fall 2011 with three books in three months.

Orbit US has signed for four new novels with Joe Abercrombie. The first will be a standalone and then a trilogy — all set in the same world as the First Law trilogy. Joe is hard at work writing as we speak! And I can’t wait to read his newest, which we plan to publish next fall 2012!

Orbit worldwide also acquired two new novels from the acclaimed N.K. Jemisin: THE KILLING MOON and THE SHADOWED SUN. We’ll be publishing them in May 2012 and June 2012. I absolutely loved the KILLING MOON — and then THE SHADOWED SUN blew me out of the water — it’s full of assassin priests, mad kings and a goddess of death. Nora has been nominated for the Hugo and the Locus Award for Best First Novel (as well as a host of other awards). We’ll have covers for you soon on those two…

And finally, Orbit worldwide is publishing a new Lilith Saintcrow series. It is tentatively titled THE IRON WYRM AFFAIR (As in Bannon and Clare in…THE IRON WYRM AFFAIR). Lilith has outdone herself in this amazing Victorian steampunk urban fantasy (yes! I already read the first draft!!!). I won’t give much away other than to say imagine Sherlock Homes and Dr. Watson — if Dr. Watson was a sorceress. It will be out next August 2012.

Deliveries!

To list a few to make you all JEALOUS.

I’ve read the final Alexia Tarabotti novel, TIMELESS by Gail Carriger (out next March 2012) and it’s phenomenal.

Kate Elliott turned in COLD FIRE, #2 in the Spirit Walker series and we’ll see the hunter who is stalking Cat. Dangerous! It’s out this September 2011.

The final novel in N.K. Jemisin’s Inheritance trilogy, THE KINGDOM OF GODS, will be out in October 2011. It is a perfect end to a trilogy and even has a short story that made me (Evil Editor!) tear up.

I have in EYE OF THE TEMPEST by Nicole Peeler — her fourth book out this Autumn. SO MUCH FUN!

Lilith Saintcrow turned in ANGEL TOWN, the final book of the Jill Kismet. There is a grave, maggots, and dead flesh. Need I say more? Out in November 2011.

Jaye Wells turned in SILVER-TONGUED DEVIL. The fourth Sabina Kane novel kicks some serious demon ass and you’ll see it in shelves in January 2012.

And a few from DongWon:

Daniel Abraham has turned in THE KING’S BLOOD, the sequel to THE DRAGON’S PATH and it is awesome. It gets real, yo.

And, since Daniel is the hardest working man in publishing, he and his co-author Ty Franck delivered the second book in The Expanse series, CALIBAN’S WAR under the James S.A. Corey pseudonym.

Finally Amanda Downum came in the with the third Necromancer Chronicles book, THE KINGDOMS OF DUST which features more jinn, necromancers, and demons than you can shake a stick at.

Orbit acquires three new Charles Stross novels

I’m delighted to announce our acquisition of three wonderful new books by the award-winning Charles Stross, and there’s been a big buzz of excitement at Orbit HQ over this new deal. I’ve loved Charles Stross’s books for years and always enjoy his wit, his storytelling wizardry and his playful familiarity with the cutting edge of technology. The new novels are The Apocalypse Codex, Neptune’s Brood and The Lambda Functionary and span the full range of Stross’s work – from Lovecraftian horror to space opera to near-future crime. Orbit acquires self-published ebook bestseller

Orbit is pleased to announce that it has acquired rights to publish the Riyria Revelations series by self-published author Michael J. Sullivan. Orbit will be publishing the complete series in three volumes in consecutive months in Fall/Winter 2011-2012. The first volume, Theft of Swords, will be published in November 2011; the second volume, Rise of Empire, in December 2011, and the final volume, Heir of Novron, in January 2012.

Michael J. Sullivan has already self-published the series in ebook and print-on-demand editions, and each volume has been prominent on the ebook fantasy bestseller charts.

Senior Editor Devi Pillai says: “This is the kind of fabulous new adventure fantasy that readers of Terry Brooks and Brent Weeks can fall in love with. Lilith Saintcrow’s Bannon and Clare

I’m excited to announce that we’ll be publishing a whole new series with Lilith Saintcrow. Lili is one of the first urban fantasy authors I acquired and I’m over the moon to tell you about her new series, a combination of historical urban fantasy and steampunk. We’ll be publishing the first book in Summer 2012.

A bit about the story to whet your appetites:

Emma Bannon, Prime sorceress in the service of the Empire, has a mission: to protect Archibald Clare, a failed, unregistered mentath. His skills of deduction are legendary, and her own sorcery is not inconsiderable. It doesn’t much help that they dislike each other, or that Bannon’s Shield, Mikal, might just be a traitor himself. Or that the conspiracy killing registered mentaths and sorcerers alike will just as likely kill them as seduce them into treachery toward their Queen. In an alternate London where illogical magic has turned the Industrial Revolution on its head, Bannon and Clare now face hostility, treason, cannon fire, black sorcery, and the problem of reliably finding hansom cabs. The game is afoot…

In the meantime, we’re also publishing our first Lili omnibus – bringing together the collected Dante Valentine novels in one volume in Spring 2011 (US/UK)!

Exciting new Dresden Files acquisition

Hot news – Orbit has acquired three new Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher! This means we’ll be able to bring you even more of the inimitable Harry Dresden P.I., the only wizard in the Chicago phonebook.

The ever-popular Dresden Files are getting even better with every new adventure. So if you love urban fantasy or crime noir, and haven’t tried these yet, what are you waiting for?!

The first of the new books will be published in Summer 2012, but in the meantime we have a bumper crop of Dresden Files coming up. We start with Changes in paperback in March, beautifully arrayed in our brand new Dresden Files cover style. This combines Chris McGrath’s great illustration with designer Peter Cotton’s design and layout. Then in April we have Side Jobs (Dresden Files short stories), followed in May by our fabulous-looking Dresden Files reissues with new cover designs. Then to really add to the treat pile, we have Ghost Story in hardback in the summer.

Hope you’ve got some reading time set aside, you know it’s worth it!
