New Acquisition: THE BOOKS OF BABEL by Josiah Bancroft

Josiah BancroftIn fantasy, looming towers are a staple, but we rarely see the intricate details of their inner workings. If you’ve ever wanted to deeply explore a world set within one of these iconic towers, Orbit has just the series for you. We’ve acquired Josiah Bancroft’s stunning and strange self-published, debut fantasy series, The Books of Babel, which begins with SENLIN ASCENDS. It has received some major praise from fantasy authors and fans alike. The series focuses on Thomas Senlin, a mild-mannered headmaster who quickly becomes lost in the massive and ancient Tower of Babel. Now, we’ll let some other folks do the talking:

Senlin Ascends is one of the best reads I’ve had in ages . . . I was dragged in and didn’t escape until I’d finished two or three days later.”

—Mark Lawrence, author of Prince of Thorns

Senlin Ascends crosses the everyday strangeness and lyrical prose of Borges and Gogol with all the action and adventure of high fantasy. I loved it, and grabbed the next one as soon as I turned the last page.”

—Django Wexler, author of The Thousand Names

“Bancroft succeeds amazingly in creating a baffling world that offers little tenderness or hope, but in which the pursuit of instinct and love, dedication and shared sacrifice can overcome barriers. If he sustains the tone of quirky menace in his planned sequel, the reader will find much to applaud.”

Publishers Weekly, starred review

Senlin Ascends starts off with a bang, and it never slows down. With its breathtaking pace, this book will appeal to a wide variety of readers.”

—San Francisco Book Review

“This is an exceedingly rich book. A depth of imagination married with a poetic turn of phrase and an engaging cast of characters conspire to deliver an epic story soaring high above the clouds.”

“Whimsy, adventure, and romance are the Tower’s real trade.” – Everyman’s Guide to the Tower of Babel, I. V

The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Immense as a mountain, the ancient Tower holds unnumbered ringdoms, warring and peaceful, stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. It is a world of geniuses and tyrants, of airships and steam engines, of unusual animals and mysterious machines.

Soon after arriving for his honeymoon at the Tower, the mild-mannered headmaster of a small village school, Thomas Senlin, loses track of his wife, Marya, in the crowds. Senlin’s search carries him through madhouses, ballrooms, and burlesque theaters. He must survive betrayal, assassination, and the long guns of a flying fortress. But if he hopes to find his wife, he will have to do more than just survive.

This quiet man of letters must become a man of action.

Orbit has acquired World English language rights in four books from Ian Drury of Sheil Land Associates Ltd., and the first book, Senlin Ascends, will hit shelves in early 2018. Follow Josiah Bancroft on Twitter and Facebook.

Cover Launch: THE LAND YOU NEVER LEAVE by Angus Watson

We’re really excited about Angus Watson’s action-packed new series, which is set to explode onto the fantasy scene in June with YOU DIE WHEN YOU DIE. In fact, we’re so excited that we’ve gone and designed the cover for the second book before the first is even out! So here it is: the fantastic cover for THE LAND YOU NEVER LEAVE, courtesy of artist Larry Rostant and our in-house designer Ceara Elliott!

Angus’s new series follows the story of Finn, a young warrior whose settlement is razed by invaders. Cast adrift on a strange new continent, Finn must undertake a perilous journey, battling monsters and hostile clans while assassins snap at his heels. The good news is that he’s not alone on this adventure. The bad news is that some of his companions pose just as much danger to him as the unknown landscape . . .

Angus Watson is the author of the Iron Age trilogy (AGE OF IRON [UK/US/ANZ], CLASH OF IRON [UK/US/ANZ] and REIGN OF IRON [UK/US/ANZ]) and can be found online on Twitter and on his website.

‘Would I read the next one? Yes, absolutely. Bring me my hammer, bring my beer, bring it on!’ – SF CROWSNEST

‘Watson’s tale is gore-soaked and profanity-laden – full of visceral combat and earthy humour, and laced with subtle magic’ – PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Jamie’s previous series THE LAZARUS WAR has earned high praise from the likes of Michael Cobley, Neal Asher, Jack Campbell and many others – and fans of the series will be pleased to hear that this new trilogy is set in the same world.

THE ETERNITY WAR is also a great jumping-off point for brand new readers, so if you enjoy the space opera of James S. A. Corey and Peter F. Hamilton – or military science fiction of any kind – this is a series you should check out.

Lieutenant Keira Jenkins is an experienced simulant operative and leader of the Jackals, a team of raw recruits keen to taste battle. They soon get their chance when the Black Spiral terrorist network seizes control of a space station.

THE FIFTH WARD: FIRST WATCH by Dale Lucas

LIVE BY THE LAW OR DIE BY THE SWORD.

The Fifth Ward series by Dale Lucas gives us a rare glimpse into a fantasy city at a time when a hero isn’t on a journey and a dark lord isn’t threatening to destroy the world. Instead, we meet two reluctant partners on the Wardwatch – Rem, a human trying to escape his past, and Torval, a dwarf with a maul who hits first and asks questions later.

As members of the Wardwatch, they’re responsible for keeping the peace in a city teeming with drug dealing orcs, mind-controlling elves, uncooperative mages, and humans being typical humans.

The Fifth Ward is every buddy cop movie you’ve ever loved mixed with your favorite fantasy setting. I promise, you are not too old for this sh*t.
